Why is this play significant?
It's not very well known but - largely thanks to Alan Ayckbourn - theatre in the round in Scarborough has an unusually strong tradition of producing work by American playwright. Between 1970 and 1996, it was very common for North American playwrights to feature in the schedules. The reason for this is probably entirely down to the interests of Alan Ayckbourn.Notes
○ The American Dream was presented as a double bill with Edward Albee's The Sandbox.
○ The production was not initially advertised as a double-bill and the addition of The Sandbox was a late addition to the schedule.
○ The American Dream Double Bill was initially advertised as ending on 19 August, but the final week in repertory saw it replaced with The Shy Gasman. The American Dream Double Bill was advertised as running from 18 - 24 June, 2 -8, 23 - 29 July and 13 - 19 August, but the latter week saw the plays replaced according to adverts from the period.
