Why is this play significant?
The professional playwriting debut of the award-winning writer Robert Shearman, who would have a number of plays produced in Scarborough over the next decade. Robert would go on to to work on stage and screen, notably Dalek -the award-winning episode of the long-running BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who which reintroduced the famed monsters back to the screen after a break of 17 years (and in this author's opinion still stands as one of the finest episodes of the show written). Robert is now best known as an award-winning and acclaimed prose writer.

○ White Lies was performed at lunch-times and as a late-night show in the Studio at the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round.
○ This marked the debut of the writer Robert Shearman at the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round, one of several writers during this period (such as Tim Firth and Vanessa Brooks), who would essentially launch their successful writing careers from the venue. Robert, who had previously won the 1993 Sunday Times Playwriting Award, would go on to become an acclaimed and award-winning playwright, screenwriter and prose writer.
