Why is this play significant?
Alan Ayckbourn's first tragi-comic play and also his first dalliance with water on stage - which would reach its apex in Way Upstream in 1981 when the entire stage was filled with water. Famously - and much to the chagrin of Scarborough Library - the pond featured in Time And Time Again sprung a leak overnight and dripped into the periodicals section of the Reading Room beneath….Notes
○ Time And Time Again was the only production directed by Alan Ayckbourn during the 1971 summer season at the Library Theatre, primarily due to his commitments to his first transfer of a play - How The Other Half Loves - to North America.
○ It was the first production to have a water feature on stage at Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, Scarborough, in the form of a small pond. Early in the play's run, this leaked overnight into the reading room of Scarborough public library directly beneath the Concert Room, where performances took place.
○ This production marked the debut of Christopher Godwin with the company who would go on to originate some of the most famous Ayckbourn characters, such as Norman in The Norman Conquests and Dennis in Just Between Ourselves.
○ The 1971 season was overseen by Caroline Smith as the Director Of Productions (Artistic Director). She directed all but one of the plays - Time And Time Again - and was the final person to be seasonally appointed to this role before Alan Ayckbourn was appointed Artistic Director in 1972 through to 2009.
