○ Absolutely Free was commissioned by Alan Ayckbourn for the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round after he had read a play (Had I Been Alone) by Stephen Lavell which had won the International Students Playscript Competition; the competition was run in conjunction with the National Student Drama Festival and which Alan helped judge for many years.
