Why is this play significant?

Forty Years On was the first production to be staged in the end-stage auditorium, The McCarthy. Alan Ayckbourn's original intention was both The Round and The McCarthy would be producing work simultaneously throughout the idea. Sadly, this never proved financially viable and The McCarthy became better known for films and visiting productions than for home-grown productions.

Notes

Forty Years On featured two companies for the pupils of Albion House school due to their ages.
This was the inaugural production in the Stephen Joseph Theatre's McCarthy auditorium.
