1967 Production Notes
The 1967 summer season at Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, Scarborough, was notable for having two young actors in the company who would go on to considerable stage and screen success in Robert Powell and John Nettles; the season marked John Nettles' professional stage debut.
Hop, Step & Jump marked the second - and final - world premiere of a play by noted northern playwright Alan Plater for the Scarborough company.
The Sparrow marked the first time Alan Ayckbourn had directed one of his own plays at Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, Scarborough. From this point forward, he will direct the world premieres of all but five of his plays in Scarborough (as of 2026).
The Sparrow was originally advertised with the title The Silver Collection. This appeared on the earliest poster and in early discussions of the season. It was then altered to The Sparrow, which appears in brochures and on later posters for the season.
Eden End was recorded by the BBC as part of its Saturday Night Theatre: Britain In Repertory season in 1967. The play, directed by Alfred Bradley, was broadcast on the BBC Home Service on 23 September at 8.30pm. The production was directed by Rodney Wood and produced with Alfred Bradley with the same company with the exception of Geoffrey Banks playing Dr Kirby, Douglas Fielding playing Geoffrey Farrant and Bob Grant playing Charles Appleby.
Eden End is considered to be the 100th production to be staged by the company at Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre since its founding in 1955.
